Maximize Pedestrian Safety

Imagine you live on the North side of the tracks and you walk when you go into town as many people do.  We need to have a pedestrian crosswalk at San Pedro and 4th Street which is the only other street that goes across the tracks to the North side of town in the downtown area.  There are many students who have to cross 4th Street to get to school and it would be so much safer if there was a pedestrian crosswalk at San Pedro and 4th Street. The only way to cross safely is at Patagonia and 4th Street where there is a street light and a pedestrian crosswalk. 

The map on the right is an aerial view of 4th Street and San Pedro.  Fourth Street is also known as Business Loop I-10 and AZ-80, or what we call the main drag through Benson, Arizona.  This would be a great place to add a pedestrian crosswalk.  The fruition of this crosswalk would improve the safety of our citizens and visitors.

This picture is looking to the West and North side of 4th Street.  There is a parking area that spans almost 4 blocks.  But the problem is that the only place to visit is the visitor center. The problem is the parking on the North side of the street has no way for visitors to cross safely to go visit the many small businesses and restaurants we have to offer.  The visitor center is located just West of the intersection of San Pedro and 4th Street.  Wouldn't you think that once the visitors go to the visitor center then they would like to go visit the town and not have to re-park somewhere else?  Then we need to have a pedestrian crosswalk to invite our visitors to have a place to cross.
